East West College provides a variety of services to its students as they move through their programs of study. The staff is dedicated to providing students with a positive experience through their support.
Dean of Students
The Dean of Students helps students manage problems they encounter during their massage training program. This includes helping students understand college policies, class schedules, course requirements and other academic matters. It also involves helping students deal with personal difficulties that arise during their massage training. While the Dean of Students provides short term support for students, students who would benefit from counseling are referred to outside resources. The Dean of Students also helps faculty members with problems that may arise with students in the course of their training.
The Dean of Students is available on a walk-in basis or by appointment throughout the week according to a schedule posted outside his/her office. In the event s/he is not available at the time a student calls or stop by, s/he may arrange for an appointment through the Front Desk during regular business hours for her/him to meet with you or to call you to discuss your needs.
New Student Orientation
Prior to the first week of class, all new students must attend an East West College ‘New Student Orientation Program' to introduce students to the college, its policies, staff, faculty and each other. The Dean of Students and other staff and faculty review the most significant EWC policies and procedures, provide study tips, and facilitate students meeting each other for the first time. The date and times are available from an Admissions Representative or the Front Desk. The schedule for the orientation is also listed in the Academic Calendar.
Tutoring
East West College understands that some courses can be challenging and that students sometimes need additional support to be successful. To help students succeed, the college offers free individual tutoring by providing a list of approved tutors and a system of payment vouchers to make this an easy and rewarding experience. Details are available from the Dean of Students.
Library
East West College's library contains a full selection of the required, recommended and related books for all massage therapy training program courses. Its holdings also include a variety of other massage and bodywork books, journals, magazines, tapes, videos and CDs for student use. Library holdings are updated each term to include the latest materials that relate to all courses specifically to meet student needs and to reflect the diversity of literature available concerning massage therapy and bodywork in general. Books and videos may be checked out through the Bookstore.
Student Lounge
East West College offers a Student Lounge. In addition, there is a kitchen area which has a refrigerator, microwave oven, and sink and is available to all students of East West College who choose to prepare their own food. The lounge also provides an area for students to study in a group and socialize between classes. It is equipped with vending machines, a refrigerator and a telephone for students to make local calls.
Student Identification Card
East West College provides students a photo identification card that can be used to receive applicable student discounts and to borrow materials from the college library. The card is given to students within 30 days of their program start date and expires on their expected graduation date. If a card is lost or stolen, a new card can be ordered at the Front Desk for a $10 replacement fee.
Childcare
East West College does not provide childcare, but there are good alternatives for childcare within walking distance of all locations. Children may not be present in the classrooms while a class is taking place and may not be anywhere on campus while a parent is attending a class.
Counseling
If a student requires counseling, the Portland area has many excellent choices for good counselors. The Dean of Students can provide a reference list of qualified local counselors and therapists. Since East West College is a drug-free environment, students experiencing a problem with addictive substances will be referred to appropriate counseling resources.
Student Reading and Study Room
East West College provides reading and study areas complete with desks, chairs, and appropriate lighting for student use. A quiet and peaceful atmosphere help make this area a great place to study.
Liability Insurance
East West College maintains liability (not health) insurance for all enrolled students. This insurance covers these students during class and practice massage assignments with other students on campus and during their participation in the classes that meet off campus. East West College does not cover any personal losses or damage to personal property a student may incur while on campus or in a designated parking lot.
Graduation
East West College holds two graduation ceremonies per year for students who have successfully completed their massage therapy training. The ceremony is held off campus and features a keynote speaker and musical entertainment as well as presentations from graduating students. For students completing their programs in the Fall or Winter terms, the graduation ceremony is held in April. For those completing their programs in the Spring or Summer terms, the ceremony is held in October.
